XBMC Dvd play back in HD

  • me and my borther have a faud. i say with xbmc you can play a normal dvd in hd 720p but he saids" no you cant, and its not hd, your stupid!" can someone plese tell me and tell my brother who is right on this sisuation. we have a large projection tv and the hd compent cord for the xbox pluged in. thank for any help

    in an effort to bring peace between you two...

    a. the xbox hardware is incapable of playing true hd content. both the cpu and gpu are not up to par with that. keep in mind this machine was designed during the late 90's and introduced at about 2000 so this was not much of an issue back then.

    b. it is true that the xbox is capable of playing 720p and 1080i content over the advanced av pack but it is done via up-sampling the content rather than playing true hd.

    c. unless i missed something, you can't actually find actual hd dvds yet in retail stores / rental stores. the stuff you might be able to get is the various demo hd clips which simply happen to be burned on dvds.

    d. i happen to be using the "hd" connection from my xbox to a true hd sony projector and i can clearly say - true hd or not, it is worth it! even while playing video games! :kickass:

  • technically your brother is correct. it is not true hd. the best a dvd can be is 480p, what xbmc will do is upsample the resoulution to 720p. this can look good or better on hdtv sets than 480p. however, a good hdtv can also take a 480p and do it's best to display the picture, however 480p is the source that your starting out with. i havent tried too many dvd's on xbmc, i got heavy interlacing on a xfiles dvd when i tried. however, 350mb xvid of a tv episode of lost looks amazing (considering the source) upscaled to 780p on my 42 inch plasma.
