Tottenham Release Anderton

Tottenham have released Darren Anderton and Christian Ziege after a season of disappointment at White Hart Lane.
The North Londoners, languishing in 15th place in the Premiership table, have decided not to renew the contracts of the experienced duo.

Anderton has struggled with injuries during his time with Spurs but was once being talked about as a £7 million target for Manchester United so the fact he is leaving on a free is something of a surprise.

His former club Portsmouth may be one of the clubs interested in snapping up the former England international, who racked up 384 appearances for Spurs.

Ziege has also had injury travails and will undoubtedly attract attention from his native Germany.

Gus Poyet, as expected, is also leaving the club, who are still seeking a permanent manager, but Jamie Redknapp is staying put after agreeing a one-year contract extension.

"I'm pleased to announce that Jamie will be staying with us for next season," chairman Daniel Levy told Spurs' official website.

"In respect of those leaving us, I should like to thank the players and wish them well in the future.

"In particular, we wish Darren well after no less than 12 years at the club. Gus and Christian have given the supporters much to cheer about during their stay too."

Spurs have also released goalkeepers Lars Hirschfeld and Shwan Jalal, plus young Danny Foster.
