So Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, and Jimmie Johnson dominated this season, so was it good for the sport?

  • These 3 guys dominated the season, between them, they had a combined 24 wins in Cup. That 2/3 of the Cup season.

Guys that yearly get wins didn't get them this year. (Ex: Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, etc.). Mainly cause the season was dominated by those 3 men.

So did the domination of the Big Three hurt or help NASCAR as a sport?

  • I think for NASCAR, yes, it was good. It was real good for NASCAR since the sport got a lot of attention because of each of the three, especially Carl and Kyle at Bristol. But I personally didn't enjoy it as a fan. I felt like several drivers like Gordon, Harvick, and Kenseth deserved at least one or two wins. I hope we see a bunch of drivers win next year, not just a few.

  • I don't think it hurt it any. Fans of those three were pretty happy...me included. But yeah I would have liked to see some different winners last season. Jeff G for one...pretty close a few times there...and Elliot and Martin Truex Jr. for others.
Look at the Daytona 500 when Ryan Newman won. He won a lot of poles but that win was pretty elusive in the past few years. Then he wins the Daytona...and the Anniversary one at that...and everyone went wild. Even those who don't count him among their favorites had good things to say. So I am not the only one who would like to see someone else win a race or two even if he wasn't the favorite.
I don't think it hurt the sport any at all. The France's seem to be contented with doing that all by themselves. :)

  • Very good question. I'd have to say that it was a good thing. There have been years when only one driver dominated. (Dale, Sr., Rusty, Jeff.)
The performances of Kyle, Carl and Jimmie might cause more people to tune in next year. I, for one, can't wait to see what they can do in 2009!

  • it helped it somewhat because Jimmie Johnson's 3-peat gave more exposure to NASCAR.

but it also hurt it in other places, such as its fan base it has had since the 1960's. seeing 3 drivers who aren't as old-style as other drivers are dominate really gets on the veteran fans' nerves. And I'm talking about die-hard, killer redneck fatties who have never missed a race. They feel they are losing their roots and have stopped watching.

  • I think it was good for the sport, not so much because those 3 dominated but because 3 TEAMS and 3 different manufacturers dominated this year. Last year was pretty much a 2 horse race with both of them being from the same team. Some new rivalries were created this year and the excitement level was as high as it's been going into the chase. The way Kyle started and Carl finished the season was awesome and Jimmie's 3rd in a row is NASCAR history. It was a great year for NASCAR as far as I'm concerned!
    4's FINE N 09!!!!

  • Absolutely great for the sport. Three role models, three different teams and three guys winning a bunch of races instead of one. And they haven't even been divorced yet. And they win by pure racing skills. It's a better and more developed NASCAR kinda like F1 and Indy. The way it should be. Now if the economy, COT and Chase would invent itself it would be even better. The old NASCAR was good but only 50% racing with only 5 drivers capable of winning. Now 20 guys can win on any given day/night.

  • I think it's great for the sport. People that don't even know about our beloved NASCAR have to notice when domination happens and it draws them to watch to see what the hype is. Then after they watch a race or two....HOOKED!
They like we, want to see what happens next.

  • It hurt the sport very bad as their fan base depleted and it was worth it to see every race as the wiiner was normally the same one

  • I think it was a combo of both. They got a biger fan base (18,48,99), but it could have lowered the TV ratings, do to Gordon, Kenseth, and Harvick struggling.

  • I think it was good for Nascar. Im glad that it just wasn't a lone car manufacturer that got all the wins. I think that it has opened up the eye's of other team owners and drivers that they are going to have to get their act together to be competitive with those three or risk losing it all. With the no testing policy now its going to make everyone get it right and keep it there.

So yeah I think its going to make Nascar a even better sport now.The other 40 drivers and teams have something to shoot for now and I hope that them three guys don't get complacent and slip behind everyone.

  • It was an awesome season. Kyle Busch stole the show, making it look like he would be unstoppable. And then Jimmie Johnson starts growing into the Champion that he is. And then comes along Carl Edwards to "save the day" The only guy who could stop Jimmie from a championship. And Carl fought, right up to Homestead. It was an excellent season, with edge of the seat competition. I beleive Carl Edwards will be the one to take the Cup in '09. It did not hurt the sport at all. In fact, I think it was good for the sport. Or at least for Chevrolet and Ford.

  • I think it did because even though they had an incredible season none of them fit the role model that a majority of the viewers are looking for. Let me explain ... Dale Earnhardt Sr was the sport's role model and nobody else has been able to fill those shoes no matter how many times someone wins. They all may be winners but they are not role models that people want to call their hero (as Dale was).

  • According to TV ratings, it didn't hurt none.
3 million+ viewers tuned in each week to watch.

  • I think it hurt it

  • Badly hurt it

  • well it didnt do it no good thats for sure

  • It didn't hurt the solid fan base that will be there year after year. We wanna see hard racing and our favorite guy, win or lose will be our favorite guy. The economy will do more than who won the race ever could. I adore Carl, think Kyle is hated way more than necessary and who the heck doesn't know that Jimmie J. is one of the most talented guys out there? Can't we just be happy that they had to work their butts off for it? It was a tight race this year. I still don't like COTs, but they are learning to work with them and there was a lot more racing this year. I fell asleep alot more watching races last year.....LOL!

  • To be Honest i got sick of watching them win over and over. It HURT Nascar. I started rooting for drivers i don't normally like, just to see someone other than the three win. LOL Good question.
The people who say it didn't hurt Nascar, are probably a fan of one of the three. I don't mean this in a bad way but if Martin Truex Jr. won most the races i would be more optimistic, and just might have answered HELPED to this question.

  • Shouldn't have hurt it. Should make the other teams do better to knock them off in 09.

  • I think a lot of people assume that it hurt the sport, but if you are one that believes the sport is hurt; then there are numerous other reason to incorporate in to that equation (belief) rather then just the one of three people dominating.

I thought it was cool to see Kyle Busch drive and win, a Ford (Edwards do well) and Jimmie Johnson get it right for a third year in the row. So (the 3 dominating) did not ruin the sport for me; it just made it that much better.
