"If atheists ran the world, the world would be a much better place." How so?

  • Paraphrasing a Yahoo Answerer. What about an atheist would make him or her uniquely more qualified to make important decisions regarding the well-being of those he or she would have been chosen to serve. Please, no personal attacks on atheists or on anyone's intelligence or sincerity.

  • Nothing would make him more qualified than anyone else. I don't think.

  • I hope my friend STEPH stops by to answer that. F.P

  • They would purify it like Hitler and Stalin tried.

  • i don't think atheists would truly have made much of a difference. the problem is that people have to connect with something. for example, if religion were to cease today, we would still have unity based on things like race, sex, location, and so on.

now it seems fine and well that we have unity. but, and this is the problem, in that unity we also encourage a level of separation or exclusion. in our pride, we inadvertently become braggarts to some degree. religion is just another way for people to further include themselves into something while potentially excluding themselves from other things.

for example, i had a big argument with my friend because he's a christian person and i consider myself agnostic. i believe in the concept of god but not in the christian, or any particular faith's, version of what defines god. my own friend, of more than 10 years, literally condemned me to hell because i would not follow his views or ideas of church. being that i had a strong catholic upbringing, i was absolutely able to take him to task on his feelings towards my views. i pointed out his own lack of tolerance and respect for others' beliefs. i pointed out his lack of knowledge of the bible and the misinformation that is taught throughout churches in the nation. the conversation turned into a debate into an argument because he couldn't handle the sheer volume of information i was giving him. he arbitrarily condemned billions of people across the world INCLUDING other christians because they were NOT "praising God" in the way he believed his christian god should be praised.

how can one who claims brotherly love also condemn so many at the same time? this is the problem of inclusion and exclusion when we practice this type of group-based unity.

so no, i don't think this world would be a better place if atheists ran it because even atheists still want to belong to something that will inadvertently exclude others and cause the same rifts that religions have.

the human race has not evolved, mentally nor emotionally, to a place where we can simply respect humanity as it is, outside of the things that separate us.

for EXAMPLE (i hope people understand this is an example), because i am black and i want to hang out with other blacks, i should exclude non-blacks from my circle and even be hostile to non-blacks if they try to include themselves in my community. THAT'S COMPLETELY LUDICROUS. but this is the attitude that pervades our society as a whole - chinese railroad workers, japanese internment camps, slavery, jim crow laws, caste systems, jewish holocaust and so on.

  • I cannot say that an athiest has higher morals or better judgment then a religious person, but they tend to make more rational decisions (like exploring stemn cell research for cures to disease rather then not because an embryo is killed), but I guess the same could be said about if Buddhists rant the world or if Muslims ran the world... if everyone agreed then there would be no conflicts, but they don't. The problem though, is that even though we don't always see things the same but we think violence is a way to solve things when it is not.

  • cuz there would be no religion, thus no fighting

  • The world was made by God.
The people in it were made by God.
How can people who reject the boss be trusted to run the boss's company?
I think Atheists would make a complete mess of things because they would have no guidance or council with the Guy who wrote the instruction book!!

Wars are not caused by people of faith but by faithless people in the name of faith. If you truly love God you can only love other people because we are all part of God. We are his own flesh and blood. If you love your neighbour then you are loving God. If you love God you will love his children. If you hate your neighbour then you are hating God.
The word God is an adaption of the word good - it means the exact same thing!

  • When you realize that there is nothing else after death, all life becomes precious but when you think there is more then you go around killing people in the name of God.

  • i don't think it would be a better place no CHRISTMAS! and well idk it would be boring , everyone has their own believes and then their would be nothing to beleive in, it would be dull beside they r never going to run the world y r u asking this?

  • Difficult one. I think occasionally, important decisions can be heavily influenced by religion. That's not to say if an atheist ran the world there would be ultimate peace, far from it. I believe, as an atheist though, that I have a moral compass, and I'm guided by that, not by a text written thousands of years ago.

  • Your statement has some logic behind it. If atheists were running the place there would be far fewer turf wars in the name of religion.

  • Coolgal, you can still celebrate secular part of Christmas. Yule logs, trees and Santa.

  • i agree. totally. no arguements over religions. no blowing each other up over something as stupid as ur religion. i 1000000% agree with whoever said that. ive often said it myself

  • If atheists ran the world, it would be full of gay retards and basically half lawless.

  • The funny thing about Atheists is that they will have to explain their beliefs to God when they meet him.

    ( oops )

  • Well, we all know that atheists don't believe there is a God in Heaven, let alone a Heaven and Hell.
So that being said, there is no way if the atheists ran this world it would be a better place without God in it. But then if they allowed God in, the atheists would be admitting there is a God and that they won't do.
So for me, it would be so impossible to see any atheists make this world a better place without God.

  • more advances in technology and research. With an actual seperation between church and state I think we would become more advanced civilization.

And probably less war, and hostility between nations.
