All right in a book I read about Dimensions. In there it says that if any one enters to a dimension he will disappear forever? If you enter to 2nd dimension you canâ ™t see the cheaters of that dimension but they can see you. Is it fiction or non-fiction?

  • What you have read is complete fiction.

Our world is exists in three dimensions of space and one of time. We live continuously in these dimensions and move about in them. They are not numbered or named. There is no 2nd or 4th dimension - just 3 dimensions of space and 1 of time. The 5th dimension was a pop singing group from the 1960's.

Now in quantum physics - the physics of sub-atomic particles, there appears to be 11 dimensions. We can't see or experience these other dimensions in any meaningful way, but we can surmise their existence in the mathematics of quantum physics.

And as the first answer said, dimensions really just amount to coordinates that tells us how to locate something.

"Meet me on the 2nd floor of the building at 6th and Main at 2:00pm" Gives you the 4 coordinates: 6th st, Main st, 2nd floor, 2pm. Loose any one of those coordinates and you miss your meeting

And in more earthly mundane matters many financial systems are 'n' dimensional. But the dimensions are purely mathematical, no actual space is created.
A two dimensional sales report might be sales by region and month
a 3 dimensional sales report might be sales by product, by region, by month
A 4 dimensional sales report might be sales by Account rep, by product, by region, by month
5 dimensions. By customer, by account rep, by product, by region, by month.

  • Link gave you a very good explanation. However I would warn everyone to be careful when reading literature about dimension. This is a tricky word that can easily be misused in e.g. pseudo science.

I think that by dimension, we understand first something that can be measured and moved in. You do that using mathematics. But mathematics involve abstract concepts like negative numbers. If zero can be divided in two in an equation, it can't in reality.

Space is certainly something we can measure and move in. It can be subdivided into three spacial dimensions. Time is also a dimension but we can only move in it in one direction.

Furthermore, quantum mechanic comes up to 11 dimensions. Now, is it something we can move in and out of? No. If it exists, it simply exist. We are not aware of it because it is of no use to our biological survival but we can't just "jump" in one of them and disappear ... or reappear somewhere else, as science-fiction would like us to believe.

We, unfortunately see things are we are used to here, on earth, in our earthly scale. Alas, at the microcosm or macrocosm scale, things are entirely different.

For example, wherever we are in the universe, we observe it as being at its center. That doesn't make sense on earth. Wherever we look at the sky, we see in the direction of its center. That doesn't make sense on earth. But yes, in the space-time web that the universe is, we observe from the center a center that is a sphere around us. This is proved by Hubble red-shift and the Cosmic Microwave Backgroud. Funny, isn't it? We observe the universe exactly the opposite of what we think it would be!

Then, when it comes to dimensions, we must also consider the notion of parallel universe, or "multiverses" as explained by Cantor, Gödle, and later, Everett.

While treated differently, it all boils down to a philosiphical question that has been asked for centuries: Do we have free-will? Because if we do, then each decision must create an alternative universe.

Here again, our earthly view is that alternative universes are like beans in a jar: many co-existing ones. But that is the wrong idea.

What is suggested is that, as time can be reduced to a series of moments, events can be reduced to a series of consecutive ones. Perhaps your decision to read this or leave it is already made but you, and any form of matter or energy in the universe, is made of particles that follow the quantum principle of uncertainity and in a fraction of time, perhaps as little as a Planck's unit of time, events will branch differently. There will be, in that dimension, a copy of you that doesn't read those words, a copy of you that wasn't even born and a copy of the universe that didn't even exist as we know it.

Of course, they are not co-existing universe, merely a dimension to perhaps what is time.

But playing hide and seek in dimensions is pure science-fiction.

  • Dimension just tells you the maximum number of numbers that you need to specify where an object is. On a telephone wire you only need one number to tell where something is compared to another object...the wire is one dimensional. On a piece of paper you need two numbers...so the piece of paper is two dimensional. Space is three dimensional. Including time to specify where an event occurs in the universe spacetime is four dimensional. Common dimensions are length, width, depth, and time. If you lived in a two dimensional world and stepped into the third dimension, you'd disappear from that world. Like a cartoon character stepping off a piece of paper. Of course you could always step back into your world again though. I should also note that some people use the word dimension when what they really mean is parallel universe.
