Convection, conduction, and radiation?

  • convection, conduction, and radiation?
    what do they mean?
    simple terms please!
i got confused while searching it up. All i know is that conduction deals with metals and convection has something to do with air and fluids!

  • Imagine a large bonfire. You stand close to it, from the side. You feel the heat. That heat energy is reaching you by radiative transfer. See the shimmering effect above the flames? That is energy leaving the fire via convective transfer. Now imagine what would happen if you were to stick your hand in the fire. You would immediately feel the serious effects of heat transfer via conduction (directly from the flame to your now burning hand!!) Does that clear things up?

  • If we heat water in a pot, heat reaches water through the pot and lower water transmit the heat to higher water by conduction.

Water is a bad conductor of heat. In liquids and gases, the molecules moves inside which also transfer heat by convection. In the above case convection is quicker.

Radiation is heat transfer through space without any medium. You receive Sun's heat by radiation.
