Can banks take money under TARP and then turn around and pay out these funds as dividends?

  • If so, isn't the government "bailout" being used to unjustly enrich shareholders in banks? Where's the mandate that the funds are to be used for lending to borrowers - instead of enriching shareholders.

Even if you subscribe to "trickle down", the idea that this aspect of TARP will somehow benefit the economy seems extremely far fetched from reality.

  • Well based on Paulson's shoveling the money wherever he wants and failure to attach strings...I'd say yes. There was supposed to be transparency as far as the decision making process and what is done with the money. Paulson has ignored this part of the law. Based on this I think I should get at least a $5 million bailout. I promise I will help the economy more than Citibank!!!

  • Yes, in truth I think Bush Administration and the financial industry may have sold us a bill of goods.
