Brown vs. BOE question?

  • Is an integrated classroom just a class with mixed cultures or is it more than that?
Why do you think the NAACP targeted education as one of the key components to the Civil Rights Movement?

    Thanks,

  • To me, a fully integrated classroom is one in which race has no influence, but the NAACP and other civil rights groups were simply trying to ensure that children of different races were permitted by law to attend the same schools.

The reason for this strategy was that maintaining different schools for black children and white children meant that resources were not shared equally and therefore, black children received an inferior education. That reason was captured in the phrase "separate is inherently unequal." A further benefit of integration, though, is that the sense of "otherness" disappears in the relationships between children who are educated together. Children educated in mixed classrooms are more tolerant and inclusive than children educated in segregated environments and are more likely to base their judgments of people on merit rather than on skin color, leading to further integration of the society at large..
