What was the Role that Religion played in settling the English colonies?(17th Century)?

  • most of the people that came to America to settle from England came for religious reasons. For instance:
    The Puritans settled Massachusetts
    Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams settled Rhode Island (originally they had lived in Massachusetts but they wanted religious freedom for all religions)
    Catholics settled Maryland
    William Penn settled Pennsylvania (a place where there was total freedom of religion and the first place to have separation of church and state)
